PARTNERSHIP STORY

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH

BACKGROUND

Drug and alcohol use and abuse have impacted our community and are often linked with depression or mental illness and may result in suicide ideation or attempts. We have faced significant challenges with substance abuse, evidenced by 44 drug overdose deaths in 2017—the deadliest year on record in Howard County. Over half of those struggling with addiction also face mental health disorders. An individual receiving counseling through Turnabout shared that without their services, they would likely be “in jail or dead.” Through Christ-centered support, community resources, and professional counseling, they found hope and healing.

OBJECTIVES
  • Provide hope and healing for people struggling with addiction.
  • Improve their quality of life.
  • Build crucial support services that address the rate of drug overdose deaths in Howard County.

COMMUNITY MEMBERS REACHED

First Baptist Church knew Turnabout services were needed in their community, but lacked awareness of how those services were impacting lives. They also did not know the extent to which our community would embrace a ministry like Turnabout.

Through a concerted effort to raise awareness and share success stories, more people have sought help through Turnabout, as evidenced by adding Conquer groups and grief counseling for parents and increasing the number of 1:1 counseling sessions.

As they serve more people, First Baptist Church is finding more people who are stepping up to volunteer for Turnabout, too. Volunteers are helping to keep the building open and accessible from 9-5 during the week and 10-2 on Saturdays. Many volunteers have participated in our community events. The show of support and trust from the community has stood out as win. The church-community partnership has exemplified Christ, community, connection, hope, help, and healing.
